There are two quotes I’d like to refer to that seem to perfectly fit the feel of art class yesterday.
Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.
-Vincent Van Gogh
If I create from the heart, nearly everything works; if from the head, almost nothing.
I often forget how much we can pull from artistic masters since it often feels like the trail we’re blazing is much more unconventional and not based in traditional art. We create from the heart, truly, and it’s easy to forget that even famous artists started somewhere, putting line next to line and paint stroke next to paint stroke until something called a “masterpiece” was created. It felt yesterday like we were doing just that- plugging carefully and thoughtfully away with small movements towards bigger pieces, remembering that even a brown piece of craft paper can build up to something beautiful and masterpiece-worthy.
We gathered many small thoughts yesterday, many small pieces of paper and many brushstrokes that will all ultimately contribute to a larger goal. It’s sometimes hard to see where everything will come together when many things are slowly being tackled all at once but yesterday was one of those days where it felt like we all put in our efforts and moved piece by piece towards a larger idea in any way we were able. It’s a funny feeling to not actually be working on a group project, but to feel like all of our tiny efforts towards separate projects ARE the group project. I think that will be another goal of ours this year- to help each other wherever we are able towards our personal goals. We have to keep remembering to collaborate, else we forget why we work in a group to begin with. Here are our tiny steps towards a larger effort from class yesterday:
